bright and early on the way to the Rails of the

2 - Sun:
Santa
Fe
Travel
to Santa Fe.
Santa Fe, a special place, established nearly
400 years ago, where not only the spectacular mountain
views and historic adobe architecture set them apart,
but where its sophistication, beauty, history and
culture are unparalleled.
Free time to stroll the streets and shop the
quaint downtown area.
Afternoon departure on the Santa
Fe Southern Railway.
The 120 year-old spur from Lamy to Santa Fe,
the vintage railcars, and the charming California
mission-style depot at 410 S. Guadalupe St., combine
to make a charming slice of history. Every year, tens
of thousands of visitors come to see, photograph and
paint the old Santa Fe Depot and ride the train along
the original high-desert route that carried early
tourist adventurers, settlers, artists and scientists
into the city.
For many visitors, the railway is the only
thing they know about Santa Fe before they come here:
they hum the 40's swing song "The Atchison,
Topeka & Santa Fe," and they point excitedly
to the familiar Santa Fe herald, the blue cross in the
circle.
Travel to Albuquerque for overnight at Drury.
Light dinner served at hotel. (B, Light Dinner)
May
3 - Mon:
Sedona,
Flagstaff
Head
westwards, following the historic alignment of Route
66.
We will skirt the Navajo Indian Reservation,
passing through the high grasslands of Northeastern
Arizona.
The grasslands will give way to pine trees, a
sign that we are climbing in altitude.
Flagstaff is situated at the base of Humphreys
Peak, the tallest point in Arizona.
Just a short journey further to Sedona where we
will travel through Oak
Creek Canyon,
a steep, narrow and very colorful gorge.
Characterized by massive red-rock formations,
as well as the contrasting riparian areas of Oak Creek
Canyon, the area surrounding this beloved community is
considered at least as beautiful as many national
parks.
Discover the miracle that is Sedona with a Trolley
ride including
Arts & Crafts village and a stop at Chapel of the
Holy Cross with spectacular views.
Nowhere else does nature yield such a balance
of vitality
and
peace, of majesty and charm, of openness and mystery.
Return to Flagstaff for overnight where you can unpack
your bags for three nights at the brand new Drury.
Light dinner served at hotel. (B, Light Dinner)
May
4 - Tues:
Grand
Canyon
Travel
to Williams, Arizona, where we will board “The
Train”.
Enjoy an excursion on
the Grand
Canyon Train
to the Grand
Canyon South Rim.
The train was the lifeline to Grand Canyon
National Park in the early 20th century. It was the
railroad, along with the Fred Harvey Company, that
commissioned and built most of the historic structures
that still exist along the South Rim.
Time for lunch and exploration.
Mid afternoon, we will board our motorcoach for
a panorama tour exploring further vistas of the Grand
Canyon.
End the day in Flagstaff. Light dinner served
at hotel. (B, Light Dinner)
May
5 - Wed:
Montezuma
Castle, Verde Canyon
Visit
Montezuma
Castle National Park.
Discover the legacy of an ancient people on the
1/3-mile loop trail leads you past an incredible
5-story cliff dwelling, through a beautiful
sycamore grove and along spring-fed Beaver Creek,
one of only a few perennial streams in Arizona.
Stop in Jerome,
a former thriving copper mining camp, now a mere ghost
town with cafes and galleries.
Boxed lunch included.
This afternoon’s highlight is a ride on the Verde
Canyon Train.
Passengers on this popular excursion train are
enthralled as the eagle-decorated vintage engines roll
past towering, crimson cliffs, near ancient Indian
ruins, over old-fashioned trestles and through a
680-foot manmade tunnel on a four-hour round trip to
deserted Perkinsville Ranch and back.
Return to Flagstaff for overnight. (B, L)
May
6 - Thurs:
Amarillo
Travel
eastwards.
Visit Petrified
Forest National Park.
With one of the world's largest and most
colorful concentrations of petrified wood, multi-hued
badlands of the Painted Desert, historic structures,
archeological sites, and displays of over
200-million-year-old fossils, this is a surprising
land of scenic wonders and fascinating science.
Continue to Amarillo for overnight at the
Drury. Light dinner served at hotel. (B, Light Dinner)
